Oktoberfest began at Messiah of the Mountains Lutheran Church 40 years ago as a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations in Yancey and Mitchell counties. It started as a craft and bake sale, and later a dinner meal was added.
In 1995 an authentic German meal was added with great success and has grown every year since. Last year the church served 290 meals along with the bake sale. The bake sale will allow you to purchase homemade jellies, cookies, cakes and pies to take home. One of the members bakes about 50 of the best blackberry and apple pies you can find anywhere.
The authentic German meal includes knockwurst, bratwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut and apple strudel.
Hope you can join us on the first Friday in October (October 4, 2019) for a great meal and wonderful fellowship. Make plans to enjoy a German meal on that day. You can eat with us at the church or get "take out" and enjoy it at home.
You can order "take out" by calling the church at 828-675-4291 so it will be ready when you come by for pickup. If you do come buy you can feel sure you will be getting a good authentic German meal and the moneys from the dinner will go to various nonprofit organizations in Yancey and Mitchell counties.
The bake sale begins at 8 am and ends when all the baked items are gone - you might want to show up early.
The German meal will be served from 11 am - 7 pm. Cost of the Authentic German Meal is only $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Oktoberfestis is sponsored by WELCA, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Again, please note that all proceeds will go to nonprofit organizations in Yancey and Mitchell counties.
